A rant about the 'Genshiken' of the "New Generation"...

I was overjoyed when Kio Shimoku exhumed the corpse of Genshiken to give us a sequel to the epic adventures of the otaku of Shiio University but-- Recently I'm getting kinda bothered by the road that this manga is taking.

Let's be serious, I loved Genshiken because it was an informative manga about otaku, where we readers could get to know more about all otaku things and develop a healthy feeling of comradeship. Genshiken was the first manga to make us otaku feel all "warm and fuzzy" about each other: it was about the development of human relationships among people who tended to be introverted because they couldn't chat about their passions and emotions like other people do: let's face it, to talk about the awesomeness of a PVC figure, it's not something that you can do with the same obviousness that you use to talk about the last movie that you watched or the weather, or, I don't know, how ugly would get Sarkozy's daughter if she took after her father.
The way the protagonist got more and more confident because of the friendship that he developed with his fellows, and how everyone managed to get over their flaws because of human interaction is like an essay on humankind evolution.

Now, Genshiken Niidaime is just one of those crappy awkward love commedies (the first one that comes to my mind is the horrible No Bra) that the world doesn't need.
Ok, I indulged myself with Hato-kun and how well he'd be with Madarame-san, and how naughty would be Kosaka in his maid outfit, but that's just fanservice, I'm old enough to see it, no :/ ? Where's the development, the IDENTIFICATION..? 'Til now the only thing that we're wondering if who's going to get paired up with Hato-kun, and we all know that when a manga focus on such things, it tends to be crappy :/

So, I'm sorry, but if I won't get a chapter about online auctions or the joys of collecting thousand versions of the same figure soon, I'm going to drop this and remove Genshiken from my list of favourites.

Well, that's disappointing...I've been thinking lately that I'd like to get back in anime and manga, but that doesn't sound very interesting. I can assume that the first series is still worth reading though, right? XD

(By the way...I guess my IQ points suddenly dropped by 50 or something, because I couldn't find the button for leaving a comment on the appropriate page, but I read the most recent Bride of the Shark update (after marathoning through the entire comic last week!) and I'm pretty intrigued by this sudden plot twist. XD What's Big Sis going to say if her little bro comes home with a shark dude in tow???)

My friend! *huggles*
Well, if you wanna "get back" in anime and manga you should probably pic a more general series :D Genshiken is for die-hard otaku, and its theme are totally otaku-oriented, so those who are not quite comfy with Japanese animation (expecially ols stuff) are not likely to get al the puns and such.
The first series is an absolute PIECE OF ART, but that's the opinion of one who nibbled at anime even before going to the nursery XD
--But it's also a, you know, "sociologic essay" on otaku, so if you're interested you could give it a try too :D The original series ends with volume 9 :3

--Or tell me what you're into right now or what you'd like to watch, so I could give you some recs :D

(Ahah XD There's a "Post a Comment" link after the annoying advertisement, at the bottom of the comic page, you can't miss it XD
And yeah-- You'll see >D ...I'm not going to spoil anything XDD)

Hiiiiii! XD *hugs*

It's the "sociology" part that really interests me; I love hearing stories about geek culture, and the cool thing about the internet is that it's pretty easy to look up references to other works. XD But yeah, I get what you mean. It'd probably be better if I started out with something easier.

I really want to see Tiger and Bunny, but other than that I don't really know where to start. XD As far as western stuff goes I'm really into Homestuck and Dr Who right now, and of course I still really enjoy high fantasy (swords and sorcery, magic, elves, that kind of stuff) and space opera (space ships, epic battles, I should actually sit down and watch the original Gundam at some point, shouldn't I?)

If the sociology part intrigues you, you can totally give it a try :D

Oh, watch Tiger&Bunny, it's really entertaining, and it's cose to the world of SuperHeroes from Comics, so it wouldn't alienate you XD ! It has great animation and wonderful characters--!
Ahah, the original Gundam is pretty badass XD You can give it a try, but I'm not sure if you'll like it ;3; !!

If you want a suggestion, you could try with Ergo Proxy... I never managed to watch the whole thing 'cause I couldn't take it seriously, but it's an interesting SciFi thriller and it may intrigue you :D
Then, if you're willing, one my personal favourites, Mouryou no Hako, which has nothing to do with SciFi or fantasy, but it's actually a psychological horror with an awesome plot. Quite awesome.
