I don't know anything about Gilga's real story! I saw his book in a bookstore once and put it in my ibs wishlist, but never got to buying it :O

But somehow I think that the hellenic culture brought getting drunk to a different level! I see Gilga amusing himself with dangerous games of having people killed by tigers and such, but when it's a matter of getting drunk... >D
