Now, for a more informative post, sine I decided to make a doujinshi about a series that practically NOBODY knows...

Ninja Bugeicho Kagemaru-den (translatable as something that sounds like "Manual for Ninja War, The Story of Kagemaru" but it's usually rendered as "Band of Ninja") is a manga published in 1959 by Sanpei Shirato, an author famous for his ninja characters and awesome series (Sasuke and Kamui on top of all, series that painted my childhood with BADASSNESS [and kinda traumatized me too-- they were both pretty violent, pessimistic and sad-- You guys in the USA will probably never manage to watch them with all your parental association stuff :/]) and a left-winged activist: in his works samurai usually met a sad destiny, expecially when they're evil, as peasants try to rise against them, usually failing. In the middle, his ninja heroes, troubled and always on the run for a reason or another.

Ninja Bugeicho is about the missions of Kagemaru, the protagonist and charismatic leader of a band of ninja made of guys rejected or oppressed by society for various reasons; the guys are up to make the peasant rise against the oppressive samurai class.
One of them is Shuzen, the villain of the series and first target of Kagemaru and his Kage Clan.
Shuzen has another rival too, the young Jutaro.
Jutaro was the son of the previous lord and the legittimate heir of the lands, but Shuzen killed his father and claimed his possessions as his own, forcing Jutaro to turn into a miserable ronin.
The series starts with Jutaro killing people around the castle to get Shuzen.
Unfortunately Shuzen has a ninja sister, Hotarubi, that wounded Jutaro by cutting off his left arm.
Jutaro is about to get killed by the kunoichi, but Kagemaru jumps into the scene and without an actual reason saves Jutaro and harms Hotarubi by cutting her arm off too.
Hotarubi retreats and so does Kagemaru after saving Jutaro.
Jutaro, being a samurai boy, is not very amused to owe one to a bandit but Kagemaru has an offer: if he sided with them, he will help Jutaro killing Shuzen and get his castle back.
Jutaro accepted and Kagemaru, cherishing the peasants revolt, defeated Shuzen, who fleed away, followed by Jutaro.
Unfortunately Jutaro doesn't fight against Shuzen, but against Akechi Mitsuhide, one of infamous Oda Nobunaga's retainers, who's incredibly similar to our villain, and got his ass bet up pretty harshly.
The boy, after being helped by Kagemaru's sister Akemi, returned to the village to get his stuff back, but bad news are there: his castle has been destroyed by the peasants and turned into cultivated land.
Jutaro is pretty pissed at Kagemaru (that of course is not around anymore) and decided to train to defeat Shuzen by himself, getting to know ninja techniques and stuff.
Meanwhile Shuzen accidentally killed Akechi and decided to take his place since the uncanny resemblance, thinking that this would grant him even more honour and monies... At the same moment Kagemaru kept plotting to free the population, aiming to the defeat of his arch-enemy Nobunaga... Then the plot goes on and on, twisting around and around until the tragic epilogue: Akemi is being held captive in Nobunaga's castle as his concubine. Jutaro, ignoring that she's Kagemaru's sister, goes there to save her. Nobunaga forced him into a tournament, if he won he could get whatever he wanted, and Jutaro asks for Akemi.
Nobunaga accepts his request despite Shuzen's protests and the two gets all lovey-dovey.
Then Shuzen, with the help of Hotarubi and Mori Ranmaru, started to plot to use Jutaro against Kagemaru. They killed Akemi, who was also pregnant (but still comes with a badass fight), and told Jutaro that the assassin was Kagemaru.
So Jutaro just got extra pissed off and sided with Hotarubi and her Iga ninja to get Kagemaru's head: Hotarubi killed all Kagemaru's companions but died in the process, as Kagemaru is finally captured by the combined forces of Jutaro and Shuzen (who's acting like Akechi, I remember you).
Jutaro got to know the truth about Kagemaru's innocence but it's now too late to save him: Kagemaru is tortured and killed, after he told Jutaro to not waste his life anymore.

To get an idea of the art and the characters, you can check the intro of the "movie" that director Oshima came up with (beware, the music is kinda addictive o_o):

And that's all, I hope it's been informative enough to make you buy my doujinshi D:
