I guess it's just not my thing. XD I'm annoyed by useless characters, regardless of their gender. Even if they ultimately just get in the way, like Rin, I still prefer characters who are actually doing something.
On the other hand, I love the dark silent type. XD It will never stop being awesome in my eyes. So you can have useless puppy boy and I can have Shiki, and we'll both be happy. XD Hooray for eroge!
Just be careful not to get the ending where Puppy Boy goes crazy and rapes Akira to death. :3
