I can only judge by the not so great*) 1998/99 Polish edition, but even despite its shortcomings I enjoyed it a lot and have fond memories of it after all these years. It's just too bad nobody ever released the whole thing - there were some talks in 2005 when the first film played in our cinemas, but nothing came out of it.
The films, well... They weren't bad per se, but nothing spectacular either. However, each of the two films has this one scene that made them worth watching: in the first film it's the hologram, in the second one it's the little girl in the street. I saw the first film in the cinema twice and both times during the hologram scene everyone in the audience was holding their breath, you could hear a pin drop; the second film I saw at home and the girl scene left me staring blankly at the screen with my jaw dropped for good 10-15 seconds. While I wouldn't recommend those films on their own merit, I would still say they are worth checking out just for those two scenes.
_______________ *) Only two out of four volumes were released, both split into two parts; volume 1 was split in the middle of a chapter; chapter titles were all removed with one or two exceptions; the dialogues were (quite faithfully) translated from the English edition; the paper quality was far from perfect; all pages were mirror-flipped; there were quite a few typos here and there. But the first part of volume 1 had thesethreepages, which was more than enough to convince me to buy it. XD BTW, this was the very first manga I've ever bought - all thanks to B&W drawn titties! XD
