From what I've heard about Lost, Damon Lindelof was good at creating mysteries, questions and cliffhangers, but totally sucked at giving any answers and resolutions. TWD, on the other hand, knows where it's going - at least on a season-to-season basis.
That black guy with a kid is Morgan, he reappears in season 3 and he's very changed by the situations he was in. I'd say, definitely finish season 1, but also give season 2 a try, at least the first half. The second season is more character-oriented than the first one, there are some good character developments. And then there's Sophia, but you have to see it for yourself. ^^
